The Red Cape. 12" high x
8" diamater. Hand-coiled red earthenware with hand-painted
white maiolica glaze.
This very pod-like vessel was created using the coil method
of hand building. While this method is slow and labor intensive,
it is favored for its flexibility in terms of allowing the
formation of very organic shapes. The pot is made of earthenware
clay and glazed with a low-fire maiolica glaze. It was hand-painted
with mineral pigments and fired to 1942 degrees F. in oxidation.
The mysterious colorful scenery was painted in response to
a dream and is something of a self-portrait of the artist.
In this dream, the artist is wrapped in a magical red velvet
cape that allows the wearer to fly high above the nocturnal
landscape seeing all that exists below in the verdant green
valley.
