Blue Skates. Hand-painted maiolica glaze
on earthenware. 31" high x 42" wide.
This puzzle-piece mural is hand-carved in high relief. It
was biscuit fired and glazed with a white maiolica glaze before
being carefully hand-painted with a limited pallet of color
to create the proper mood. In this painting, the artist finds
herself in a wintry nighttime scene at the edge of a village
with buildings that twist and move. Trees are anthropomorphized
and representative of the darker side of humanity. Beneath
the large tree in the foreground, lurks a hungry wolf baring
its teeth as it hides within a tunnel in the snow. The ground
moves dangerously beneath the skater wearing high-lace up
skates in blue suede. The thin fabric of her dress billows
in the chilled night air. A buck deer enters the scene from
the left of the composition, proudly carrying his large antler
rack strangely blooming with holly leaves.
