Sense of Freedom. Hand-painted maiolica
glaze on earthenware. 26" high x 18" wide.
This painting also depicts a scene from Zane Grey's novel
Riders of the Purple Sage. Jane, the main character
in the novel, rides out on her horse in a swirling landscape
under a vividly blue sky filled with billowing white clouds.
The orange sun begins to dip below the distant horizon casting
a glorious golden light over the land. In the immediate foreground,
orange-red poppies dance on twisted stems alluding to sleep
and ultimately danger and death. Jane rides hard and fights
to find freedom from the oppression she suffers at the hands
of a corrupt community that has colluded to steal her land
and water.
